Juan Carlos Rivera no defrauda.
Rivera is able to exploit with campanella
passages and ringing arpeggios. The Courante provides for him an impressive
demostration of his technical capability and agility, and for the force
of the theorbo at its mort athletic is the Sarabande, for a very pleasing
and tasteful demostration of the instruments capabilitu for subtle gesture
and of Rivera's easy and convincing way with ornamentations. Juan Carlos Rivera uses a single strung
instrument, which is quite closely recorded however, the playing is very
clean and technically assured with minimal extraneous noise, making for
easy and relaxing listening...his style is expressive and particularly
effective. Rivera knows how to play everything rigth. In
the D-minor Suite the prelude sounds improvisatory, beautifully phrased,
never noodly. Tempo and affective contrast between the Allemande and Courante
could not be better. The Sarabande brings tears to my eyes. (...) The
sound is great. Rivera understands Bach, understands baroque performance
style, loves music. His disc is a triumph. Everyone who wants to learn
to play Bach should listen to Rivera for guidance" |
